Design Tips
Our website editor is super easy to use and makes editing your site a breeze. Here are some design hints and tips for when you make changes to your website.
VISUAL TIPS
We suggest leaving the basic layout of your site as it is unless you're a design whizz and make changes within that basic layout.
Avoid a whole page of text running right across the page. It usually looks more visually appealing to have the page broken up using the column feature. That doesn't mean you can't have text running across the page for some parts of the page though. When splitting the page into columns you can vary the amount of columns as you move down the page. For example you might want to have text running across the page initially then break smaller areas of information into three columns across the page further down.
Try and include a good mix of text and images on each page. This will vary depending on the type of business you are in and the purpose of the page (for example a 'products' page will have more photos than an 'about us' page).
Try to create a sense of balance on the page. For example a three column page could be split evenly between the three columns or have a larger column in the centre and smaller columns on either side.
Consider your business and the message you want to get across. Who are your customers? How much time do they have when they come onto your site? Are they busy people who need information quickly or do they want time to browse and be wowed by the design?
Ensure your pages are easy to read and navigate. Simple is usually best. You don't want to confuse your customers so ensure your images, text and links are easy to see and use.
After making changes and publishing them log onto your actual site to make sure the changes published perfectly. For example test out links to make sure they work.
FONT TIPS
Consider legibility. A cursive font might look nice but is it easy to scan when reading four paragraphs of text? Stick with the Serif or San Serif fonts for settings like Paragraph Text or Image Captions and keep Handwritten or Decorative fonts to Titles and Headlines.
Don't go overboard. Even though we provide tons of web safe fonts to choose from, you
don't want to use too many of them all on a single site. Limit yourself to between one to three font families for a more harmonious look.
Use high contrast colours. Dark text will look best against a light background and vice versa. When choosing colours for paragraph text, it's rare you'll want to use a font colour outside a range of white-grey-brown-black. If you want to get more creative with your colour choices, Titles and Links are the places to do so.
Consider size. For the bulk of your text a font between 14 to 20 pixels will be perfect. For Titles and other headlines choose a size somewhere in the range of 20 to 34 pixels.
