Keywords & Phrases

What are Keywords?
You’ve probably used keywords already if you’ve ever gone to Google and typed in something to search for a particular product or service. For example let’s say you’re looking to buy some flowers for your friend for their birthday so you go to Google and type in ‘florists Auckland.’ The search engine then checks its database and returns the results, listing pages that contain the words submitted. More than one keyword strung together like the example above is called a ‘key phrase’. Both keywords and key phrases are important to your website. If you use them correctly it can help people to find your website.

How to find your Keywords/phrases?
There are few options to identify your keywords.

1.    You can attempt to guess what keywords your customers might be typing in. Although not precise (you can never know by simply guessing what keywords are successful and which are not) it is once again a good option if you are on a tight budget. You can also review your web site pages and pick out key phrases and words that describe your business, product or service and use these as your keywords/phrases.

2.    Google adwords also provide a free tool which can help you to identify your keywords.
Although not always accurate this tool can be a good start, especially if you are a small business on a budget. The good thing is that you don’t have to pay for Google adwords to use this free tool. You can access the tool at: https://adwords.google.com/keywordtool

3.    The most accurate way to generate the best results is to pay your website company to do some in-depth research and find out the exact words and phrases people are typing in when looking for your business/product online. At The Good Website Company we offer a keywords research service where we research and precisely identify the keywords and phrases your customers are using when they search online. These words can literally be gold as once identified and used correctly they can help drive customers to your website and result in sales. We provide you a report and also help you to include them correctly in the front and back
end of your website.

With keywords and phrases the aim is to obtain targeted traffic to your web site. Therefore, the more precise your keywords/phrases are, the greater the chances you will receive visitors that are interested in your services. Also keep in mind that single word keywords will have a lot more competition for top ranking search results than phrases.

Once you have identified the keywords for your particular business/product then these words need to be inserted into your text and into the back end of your website. If you are on our starter plan we can insert the words into the back of your web pages for you. If you have your own content management system you can do this yourself – it’s easy - just go to our instruction manual to see how.

Remember that what people are typing into search engines to search for products/services can change over time so it’s a good idea to regularly check and review your keywords/phrases.
